Thiruvananthapuram: The United Democratic Front leadership on Wednesday prevailed upon Kerala Congress(B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai to back out from his decision to contest from the Kottarakara constituency in the Assembly elections.
Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and UDF convenor P.P. Thankachan met Mr. Pillai in jail this evening to express their objection to his move to file nomination papers for Kottarakara.
An official note issued by Mr.Chandy's office said that Mr. Pillai had informed the two leaders that there was no legal bar on his contesting from the seat and that he had taken such a decision because of the wish expressed by UDF workers in the constituency that he should contest.
“He said he had no intentions of fighting the elections in spite of the ground support he had received,” the statement said.
